hymn to mother

i will not let you fade away,
who wombed me, weaned me, welcomed me.
you are my why, my yesterday,
my now, my everlastingly.

how can i not look all around
and see your face and know your smile?
no throne deserves you, not a crown
would do you justice in this life.

despite the ravages of time,
of careless wounds that i have caused,
yet you have loved me, called me “mine!”
and did forgive, whate’er the cost.

so should my love not equal yours,
and could i keep my praise away?
let every soul withhold their doors,
yet i will sing my love and lay
this tribute at your feet today.
